Wool papers, 1854-1855.

Detailed correspondence concerning Wool's activities as head of the Dept. of the Pacific. Includes material about an attempted French filibustering expedition into Sonora, Mexico, efforts to control Indians in areas acquired by the United States in the War with Mexico, and descriptions of military activities against Indians in Oregon, Washington,, and Utah. There is a also a report of Wool's military operations sent to Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Jan. 29, 1855, and letters from Davis questioning Wool's role in the filibustering expeditions. A typed transcript of the letters is available.

S. army officer who began his service during the War of 1812, led victorious troops at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War, and commanded several departments in the eastern United States until he retired on August 1, 1863.
